Summary
This gene encodes a member of the nerve growth factor family of proteins. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, at least one of which encodes a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed to generate the mature protein. Binding of this protein to its cognate receptor promotes neuronal survival in the adult brain. Expression of this gene is reduced in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's disease patients. This gene may play a role in the regulation of the stress response and in the biology of mood disorders. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2015]

RefSeqs maintained independently of Annotated Genomes

These reference sequences exist independently of genome builds. Explain

These reference sequences are curated independently of the genome annotation cycle, so their versions may not match the RefSeq versions in the current genome build. Identify version mismatches by comparing the version of the RefSeq in this section to the one reported in Genomic regions, transcripts, and products above.

    Description
Transcript Variant: This variant (5), also known as IV, BDNF4, or 3-5, differs in the 5' UTR and represents use of an alternate promoter compared to variant 1. Variants 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7-16 encode the same isoform (a).

    Status: REVIEWED

    Description
Transcript Variant: This variant (6), also known as VIIb, BDNF6B, or 4I-5, represents use of an alternate promoter and differs in the 5' UTR and 5' coding region, compared to variant 1. The resulting isoform (c) contains a longer N-terminus and lacks a predicted signal peptide compared to isoform a.

Suppressed Reference Sequence(s)

The following Reference Sequences have been suppressed. Explain

  1. NM_001143815.1: Suppressed sequence

    Description
NM_001143815.1: This RefSeq was temporarily suppressed because currently there is not sufficient data to support this transcript, which contains non-consensus splice sites in the 5' UTR.
