Summary
This gene belongs to the methyltransferase superfamily and is located in the pseudoautosomal region (PAR) of the X and Y chromosomes. The encoded enzyme catalyzes the final reaction in the synthesis of melatonin and is abundant in the pineal gland. Two amino acid substitutions (R78G and R242C) are present in the encoded protein derived from the reference strain, C57BL/6J, and this protein shows low enzyme activity relative to the protein derived from other strains. RefSeqs maintained independently of Annotated Genomes

These reference sequences exist independently of genome builds. Explain

These reference sequences are curated independently of the genome annotation cycle, so their versions may not match the RefSeq versions in the current genome build. Identify version mismatches by comparing the version of the RefSeq in this section to the one reported in Genomic regions, transcripts, and products above.

    Status: REVIEWED

    Description
Transcript Variant: This variant (2) is based on a transcript from the reference strain and includes seven nucleotide substitutions in the coding sequence compared to variant 1. Two of these nucleotide substitutions result in amino acid substitutions (R78G and R242C) in the encoded isoform (2), which shows low enzyme activity.
